What it takes

I've been getting a ton of questions about what it takes to make this trip possible.  There is a lot of planning that happens before getting on the airplane, so here is just a small list of what has been dominating my life for the past few months.  For anyone seriously considering taking the plunge to live abroad or to go vagabonding, don't be discouraged!  Hopefully, this list helps to make your adventure possible...

1.  QUIT YOUR JOB! FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!

2.  Apply for a Visa  in Australia (or the country of your choice) and update your passport.  Okay, maybe do this first before you quit your job.  The work/holiday visa for Australia was easy to get after paying a small fee of course.  Book flights when you see a good price.

3.  Get an international credit card.  There are some cards out there (e.g. Capitol One) that do not charge a 3% international fee per charge.  Some offer insurance on flights and car rentals purchased with the card and have points that can be redeemed for a hotel room or flight.

4.  Set up your bank account in the country you will live in to help reduce ATM fees.

5.  Get vaccinated.  It can be expensive, but a lot of health insurance companies cover them or a portion of the cost.  Long term stay in Australia only requires a few shots, but I made sure to get ANY shot needed for travel in Oceania, Asia, and Indonesia.  If the opportunity comes to hop on a plane to New Caledonia, I won't have to worry about getting sick.  I mean who wants to end up with Japanese encephalitis! Awful.

6.  SAVE MONEY!  Eat ramen, pack your lunch, channel your college days.  Every penny counts and will be used abroad.

7.  Make an appointment for your travel physical, dentist, and eye doctor.  Get a year supply of contacts and any medications you'll need - including something for the flight! Let's face it, there are not enough in flight movies and games that will make a flight to Australia bearable in coach.

8.  Have a garage sale, post items on Craigslist, donate to those in need, and find storage if you need it. The less you take, the less you haul.  Australia has clothes and toiletries, too :)

9.  Find happy homes for your pets or find boarding.

10. Get an international phone plan or cancel your phone.  I will be getting a local Australian number on a pay as you go phone and canceling my 412 number (tear, tear).  I've set up everyone I know on Skype video chat or Google voice.

11.  Have someplace to go when you arrive.  Pam-O and I just booked our apartment for the week so we have a place to be comfortable while becoming adjusted to Sydney time.  Depending on your comfort level,  www.couchsurfing.org , www.airbnb.com , and www.hostelworld.com are great options.

Some people don't want to plan everything, but we have a loose idea of where we'd like to go when we arrive in Australia.  Key word is LOOSE.  After all this planning, I'm ready to embrace the plan of having NO set plan.  I can't wait to see where in the world we end up!

What a difference a week makes

Great things happen when you just chill out and wait  for a few days.  My car finally sold, I found a home for the cat,  it's Friday and 80 degrees, and I got out of jury duty next week.  To top it off, I'm headed to see The Hunger Games.  It's a gooooooood day.  Feeling thankful.  Have a great weekend!

I'm going to miss this!

DC in spring is gorgeous!  It really is a beautiful city, and I'm going to miss this view!  The cherry blossoms are now in full bloom a week early, and the Tidal Basin looks amazing.  Walking on the Mall at night after the hustle and bustle has died down for the day is the best time to enjoy the sights!  Check out this shot.

St. Patty's Day in O'hio

What a perfect weekend! I was so excited to get on a plane and to not worry about Australia for a few days.  My car hasn't sold yet (stressor #1), and I am still looking for a temporary home for my favorite feline (stressor #2).  Being with my dear friend Ashley and her family was just what I needed! She is an amazing friend and such a great Mommy.  We fit in lots of girl time, zoo time, a sushi date, a concert at Hal and Al's, and a trip to my favorite ice cream store all in 48 hours.  Recognize these 2 ladies?  We are the next face of Hal and Al's - thanks Jay - We love your bar!

Anyone who knows me, knows about my love for ice cream... okay, it's more of an obsession! Here is a link to my favorite spot. You can have it delivered to you and it is well worth it! Don't you worry, I had the biggest cone I could get.

I didn't even make it a week...

I couldn't do it! I could not go an entire week without a car... I really did try, but a car is a wonderful thing.  It's totally different talking a leisurely walk when YOU want to, but it is not fun when you HAVE to walk several miles a day to get to your job.   I was getting up an extra hour earlier in the morning, treating 6-7 youngsters, and logging in about 4-5 miles of walking a day! I was actually paying more money to ride the DC metro to work than the amount it takes to fill up my car for the week... so thanks to a very generous friend, I can drive to work again!  Thanks a million D.

Details, details, details....

Well, this whole Australian adventure is becoming very real.  I took my car back to Pittsburgh this weekend to put it up for sale.  I am so thankful our family friend is taking care of all the details and really hope it sells soon! There is a beautiful 2006 Toyota Corolla in PA if you know anyone who is looking.
I've been without a car now for a few days and am using my legs and public transportation to get me from A to B.  Call me crazy, but I'm actually looking forward to getting a walk in a few times a day since I also cancelled my gym membership.  I now have some time in the morning to drink my coffee in peace instead of dodging angry commuters on I-395.  And people don't give you the finger as much when you're riding on the train!
My belongings have started to sell on Craigslist.  Last night someone bought the grill I put together ALL by myself 2 years ago and picked up some bedroom furniture.  The apartment looks so bare with the pictures off the wall and boxes everywhere!
Yesterday, I had a travel physical for my vaccinations and my doctor actually gave me a hug  because she was so excited for me.  She's the best.  It reminded me all the little headaches and hiccups along the way will be well worth it when I get down under May 1st!
