Tasmania... yes this is a real place. And yes, the Tasmanian devil does really exist. But no, we did not get to see one since he is an endangered little guy.
Tasmania is known as the Natural State and the Holiday Isle. It should really be called the Best Kept Secret in Australia. We had no idea what to expect from this island and were pleasantly surprised by its beauty and friendly residents.
A few fun facts... Tassie is about 300 miles south of Melbourne. It is the size of the Netherlands and has only 500,000 people. About half of those are living in the capital city of Hobart.
Why do I love Tasmania? There are so many beautiful untouched beaches, forests and islands to see. 37% of the island is National Park or World Heritage Site. The air smells for lack of a better word - clean. It is crisp and fresh when the wind blows.
Tassie also gets bonus points for the fantastic food and wine. Here pinot noir and riesling are paired with the most delicious seafood, cheeses and produce you could imagine. Cheddar, brie, oysters, salmon, scallops, prawns, strawberries... I am going to need some serious time on Weight Watchers after this visit.
The main city of Hobart is charming and not like anything I've seen before. It is a city full of character. Sailboats and ships line the wharf. There are cobblestone streets dotted with roses of every color showing off colonial homes built 200 years ago.
