Thanksgiving in Victoria

Guess who’s back…

It’s been awhile since we’ve had consistent Internet in our travels the last 2 weeks, so the blog has been a bit neglected.   Time to play catch up.  First, I finished my work contract.  Second, Pam and I were reunited along with her parents and my cousin, Emily.  And December 1st
was the anxiously awaited first day of summer. We’ve been a very busy bunch over the last week.

The lovely beach towns of Victoria were our destination for a relaxing Thanksgiving holiday with the Grazianos. Our beachfront house was perfectly placed in Lorne, a cute surf side location with cafes, shops, forest walks, and a beach boasting sparkling blue and turquoise water.  For our turkey day dinner, we went nontraditional and dined seaside.
Happy Thanksgiving

One of the most famous drives in Australia is in the state of Victoria along the Great Ocean Road.   The Great Ocean Road shows off steep cliffs, striking blue water, and rolling green hills.  We started our day long road trip adventure and weren’t far before the winding ways of the Great Ocean Road started to make US turn green.  I felt like I looked like a Mr. Yuck sticker ... who gets car sick these days? Yes, me.  I'm old. After a peppermint tea, we continued onward to Otway National Park.

On the way to Cape Otway Lightstation, a turn onto a random side road brought us the best surprise.   We drove right into hundreds of koalas in the wild along the roadside.  This was a spectacular sight!  Having been in Australia for almost 7 months, I was beginning to give up on seeing these adorable, fluffy, gray balls in the wild, but there they were, just waiting to be photographed.  These koalas were sleeping snuggled in the trees and climbing to the eucalyptus leaves.

Koalas!
We had fantastic views from Cape Otway Lightstation.  This is the oldest continuous operating lighthouse on mainland Australia commissioned in 1848 due to the large amount of shipwrecks along the rocky coast.

We had another wild animal sighting at dusk when several kangaroos bolted out of the trees onto the road, similar to our deer at home.
There are many beautiful rock formations along the rocky coast including the famous 12 apostles.  These limestone cliffs tower up to 70 meters high.

There will be many more pictures to come now that we are connected again... Cheers.
